I've been commuting to and from work in New York City for over a decade now, and I've seen it all. I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. I've seen people at their best and at their worst. I've seen things that make me laugh, cry, and shake my head in disbelief.
But through it all, one thing has remained constant: my ability to find humor in the absurdity of it all. I've learned to laugh at the delays, the crowds, and the crazy characters you encounter on public transportation. And I've learned to appreciate the small moments of joy that can make the daily grind bearable.
So, I decided to start keeping a diary of my random thoughts, rants, and funny experiences from my commutes. I hope you find them as entertaining as I do.

I'm sitting on the subway, minding my own business, when I hear a woman behind me say, "Is this seat taken?"
I look up and see a middle-aged woman with a kind face. I smile and say, "No, it's not taken." She sits down next to me and we start talking.
It turns out that she's a tourist from California. She's visiting New York City for the first time and she's loving it. She's been to all the major tourist attractions, but she's also been exploring some of the city's hidden gems. She tells me about a great little restaurant she found in the East Village and a charming park she stumbled upon in Brooklyn.
I'm always happy to talk to tourists. I love hearing about their experiences in New York City and I'm always happy to give them recommendations. I tell her about some of my favorite places in the city and she promises to check them out.
We talk for hours. By the time we reach our destination, we feel like old friends. I'm so glad I decided to give up my seat to her. It was one of the best conversations I've ever had on the subway.

I'm sitting on the bus, reading a book, when I hear a loud noise. I look up and see a man standing in the aisle, screaming at the top of his lungs.
"This is a f***ing disgrace!" he's screaming. "This city is a toilet! The mayor is a piece of s***!"
I can't believe what I'm hearing. I've never seen anything like this before on the bus.
The other passengers are all looking at him like he's crazy. Some of them are laughing, but most of them just look scared.
The man keeps screaming for a few more minutes, then he suddenly stops. He sits down in the seat next to me and starts crying.
I don't know what to say. I just sit there and listen to him cry. He tells me that he's lost his job, his wife has left him, and he's about to lose his apartment. He's at his breaking point.
I don't say much. I just listen. Sometimes, that's all people need.

I'm sitting on the train, listening to music, when I feel a tap on my shoulder. I look up and see a young woman standing there.
"Excuse me," she says. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure," I say. "What's up?"
"I'm trying to get to the Museum of Modern Art," she says. "Can you tell me how to get there from here?"
"Sure," I say. "You can transfer to the E train at the next stop. The museum is right next to the station."
"Thank you so much!" she says. "You're a lifesaver."
She smiles and walks away. I smile back. It feels good to help someone out.
I've been commuting to and from New York City for over a decade now, and I've seen it all. I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. I've seen people at their best and at their worst. I've seen things that make me laugh, cry, and shake my head in disbelief.

So, if you're ever feeling down about your commute, remember that you're not alone. And if you need a laugh, just read my diary.
