Dorothy Morris was a New Zealand nurse who volunteered to serve in the Spanish Civil War. She worked in a hospital in the town of Blanes, which was bombed by Nationalist forces. Morris was one of the few New Zealanders who served in the war, and her story is a reminder of the international support for the Republican cause.

Early Life and Career

Dorothy Morris was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1912. She trained as a nurse at Wellington Hospital and worked there for several years before volunteering to serve in the Spanish Civil War in 1937.

The Spanish Civil War

The Spanish Civil War was a bloody conflict that lasted from 1936 to 1939. The war was fought between the Republican government and the Nationalist forces led by General Francisco Franco. The Republicans were supported by the Soviet Union and Mexico, while the Nationalists were supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

Morris arrived in Spain in 1937 and was assigned to a hospital in the town of Blanes. The hospital was bombed by Nationalist forces in 1938, and Morris was forced to flee. She eventually made her way to France, where she was interned in a refugee camp.

The Canada Blanch

The Canada Blanch was a hospital ship that was used to evacuate wounded Republican soldiers from Spain. Morris was one of the nurses who worked on the ship. The Canada Blanch made several trips to Spain, and it is estimated that it evacuated over 5,000 wounded soldiers.

The Canada Blanch was bombed by Nationalist forces in 1938, and Morris was once again forced to flee. She eventually made her way back to New Zealand, where she continued to work as a nurse.

Later Life and Legacy

Morris died in Wellington in 2001. She was 89 years old. She is remembered as one of the few New Zealanders who served in the Spanish Civil War, and her story is a reminder of the international support for the Republican cause.

Dorothy Morris was a courageous and dedicated nurse who risked her life to help others during the Spanish Civil War. Her story is a reminder of the importance of international solidarity and the power of human compassion.
