The Great Lakes Storm of 1913

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913 was one of the most devastating storms in the history of the Great Lakes. The storm struck on November 9, 1913, and it lasted for four days. During that time, winds reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, and waves reached heights of up to 30 feet. The storm caused widespread damage to property and infrastructure, and it also claimed the lives of at least 250 people.

Brouwer's Heroic Rescue

Sigmund Brouwer was one of the many sailors who were caught in the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. He was captaining the steamship City of Grand Rapids, which was bound for Chicago from Grand Haven. The storm hit the ship with full force, and it quickly became clear that the ship was in danger of sinking.

Brouwer ordered his crew to abandon ship, but he stayed behind to try to save the ship. He worked tirelessly for hours, but the ship was taking on too much water. Finally, Brouwer was forced to abandon ship himself. He jumped into the icy water and swam to a lifeboat.

Brouwer was one of the few survivors of the City of Grand Rapids. He was later awarded the Carnegie Medal for his heroism. The Carnegie Medal is awarded to people who risk their lives to save others.

Brouwer's Legacy

Sigmund Brouwer's heroic rescue is a reminder of the courage and selflessness of the men and women who work on the Great Lakes. Brouwer's story is also a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of being prepared for anything.

Sigmund Brouwer died in 1935, but his legacy lives on. He is remembered as a hero who saved many lives during one of the most devastating storms in the history of the Great Lakes.
