The history of Blessed Harlaxton dates back to the 12th century, when it was a Benedictine priory. In the 16th century, the priory was dissolved by Henry VIII, and the manor house was given to Sir William Cecil, who later became Lord Burghley. The Cecil family lived at Blessed Harlaxton for over 200 years, and during that time they made many additions and alterations to the house.

In the 19th century, Blessed Harlaxton was purchased by the Earls of Dysart. The Dysart family also made many changes to the house, and they also created the beautiful gardens that surround it. In 1948, Blessed Harlaxton was sold to the University of Nottingham, which has used it as a conference and retreat center ever since.

The Harlaxton Essays were first published in 1858. They were the brainchild of Archdeacon Charles Wordsworth, who was the warden of Trinity College, Cambridge. Wordsworth wanted to create a series of essays that would address the major intellectual and religious issues of the day. He invited some of the most prominent scholars and thinkers of the time to contribute essays to the series.

The Harlaxton Essays quickly became a popular and influential series. They covered a wide range of topics, including religion, philosophy, science, and literature. The essays were written by some of the most famous scholars and thinkers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Thomas Arnold, Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, John Henry Newman, and Alfred Tennyson.

The Harlaxton Essays are still published today, and they continue to be a valuable resource for scholars and thinkers. They provide a unique insight into the intellectual and religious climate of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Architecture of Blessed Harlaxton

Blessed Harlaxton is a beautiful and historic manor house. It is built in the Tudor style, with a red brick exterior and a slate roof. The house has a large central hall, which is flanked by two wings. The hall is decorated with a magnificent hammerbeam roof. The wings contain the main living quarters, as well as a chapel and a library.

The gardens at Blessed Harlaxton are just as beautiful as the house itself. They were created by the Earls of Dysart in the 19th century, and they feature a wide variety of plants and flowers. The gardens are laid out in a formal style, with terraces, fountains, and statues.
