October 25, 1983 - Washington, D.C. - President Ronald Reagan announced that the United States had invaded the island nation of Grenada, overthrowing the Marxist government of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and restoring order to the country. The invasion, code-named Operation Urgent Fury, was launched on October 25, 1983, and involved over 7,000 American troops.

Background

The People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) of Grenada came to power in a 1979 coup d'état led by Maurice Bishop. The PRG was a Marxist-Leninist government that aligned itself with the Soviet Union and Cuba. The United States was concerned about the PRG's close ties to the Soviet Union and its potential to become a base for Soviet military operations in the Caribbean.

In 1983, the PRG began to experience internal divisions. Bishop was overthrown and murdered by a faction of the PRG led by General Hudson Austin. The United States was concerned about the instability in Grenada and the potential for a Soviet or Cuban intervention.

The Invasion

On October 25, 1983, the United States invaded Grenada. The invasion was launched from the aircraft carrier USS Independence and involved over 7,000 American troops. The American troops quickly overwhelmed the Grenadian forces and secured the island.

The invasion was successful in overthrowing the PRG and restoring order to Grenada. The American troops were withdrawn from Grenada in 1984, and the country held free elections in 1984.

Aftermath

The Grenada invasion was a major foreign policy success for the Reagan administration. It showed that the United States was willing to use military force to protect its interests in the Caribbean. The invasion also helped to improve relations between the United States and Grenada.

The Grenada invasion remains a controversial event. Some critics argue that the invasion was unnecessary and that it violated international law. Others argue that the invasion was justified and that it helped to protect the United States from Soviet and Cuban influence in the Caribbean.
